Vision loss can affect everyday activities such as cooking, shopping, using technology and accessing the community.
Thrive Health Therapies provides occupational therapy for adults with low vision or vision loss in Adelaide. Support is tailored to your needs and focuses on increasing independence, safety and confidence.
How Can Occupational Therapy Help?
An occupational therapist can assess how your vision affects daily life and help you find practical ways to complete activities more independently.
Support may help you:
Build skills for activities at home and in the community
Make better use of your remaining vision
Learn alternative or compensatory techniques
Use assistive technology more confidently
Improve the lighting, contrast and organisation of your environment
Connect with other suitable vision services
Daily Living and Community Independence
Develop practical skills for everyday activities such as cooking, household tasks, personal care, shopping and accessing the community.
Functional Vision Assessments
A functional vision assessment explores how you use your vision during everyday activities. It can identify tasks affected by vision loss and recommend strategies, equipment or environmental changes to improve safety and independence.
Residual Vision and Vision Training
Learn how to use your available vision more effectively through strategies such as visual scanning, improved lighting, increased contrast and changes to how objects or tasks are positioned.
Compensatory Techniques
Learn alternative ways to complete activities using touch, hearing, organisation, memory and consistent routines. Strategies may include tactile labels, audio information and non-visual methods of identifying objects.
Functional Capacity Assessments
A functional capacity assessment considers how your disability affects everyday activities, community participation and independence. Recommendations may address support needs, assistive technology and practical strategies.
Assistive Technology Assessments and Training
Receive assistance to select and use suitable technology, including:
Smartphones, tablets and computers
Accessibility settings and applications
Electronic magnification devices
Screen magnification and screen-reading programs
